I remember going to see Lawrence of Arabia with my grandfather shortly after the film opened in 1962. We saw it at its premiere theatre in Manhattan, a mint condition 70mm print unfolding on the very wide screen. It was a transitional moment for both of us. I had come to an age when my grandfather was no longer babysitting me; there would still be a few years before I would be taking care of him. That meant we could both enjoy the movie. As Maurice Jarre's symphonic score thundered about in the huge auditorium, I found myself wondering what it was that my grandfather would see in this film. He had lived through the First World War, albeit at some distance from the Arabian campaign. My grandfather had also lived through most of the history of cinema. His memories were of mechanical dreams projected in ever grander fashion -- longer films, the advent of sound, colour, and now widescreen with wrap-around sound. He had been born in rural Poland in the last years of the nineteenth century. Cinema was like the other machines in his life, ever larger and more powerful. He was lucky to have survived them all.
